Subnautica is an open world, underwater exploration and adventure game, currently under construction at Unknown Worlds, the independent developer behind Natural Selection 2.
Immerse yourself in a vast underwater world
After a catastrophic landing on an oceanic extraterrestrial world, the only way to go is down. The oceans of Subnautica range from shallow sunny coral reefs to dangerous abyssal pits. Manage your oxygen level while exploring seaweed forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. Water is full of life: a useful part, but a big part harmful.
Collect, Design and Survive
After waking up in your rescue ship, it's about finding water and food, and developing the equipment you need to explore as quickly as possible. Collect the resources of the ocean around you. Design knives, lighting, diving equipment, personal marine equipment. Descend farther and deeper and find scarce resources to design more and more advanced tools.
Cause Disturbance in the Food Chain
The ocean is full of life: Help yourself from the ecosystem. Attract and distract a dangerous creature with fresh fish, or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid the jaws of predators.
Be Afraid of the Night
At sunset, predators appear. The ocean is ruthless to those who are surprised by the darkness. Safe places during the day become dangerous during the night, but also reveal a beauty that those who avoid black will never see.
Fashion the World
The seabed in Subnautica is presented using a dynamic voxel terrain system. Dig caves to hide, drop loot, or create shortcuts in cave systems. Any impact of vehicles, or even explosive creatures, will change the shape of the world.
Descend into the Abyss
The cave systems open below the seabed, in dark, claustrophobic passages, or cellars illuminated by bioluminescent flora and fauna. Explore the world under the ocean floor, but do not forget your level of oxygen, and be careful to avoid the dangers lurking in the darkness.
Open development
